The shut down continues

It was a nice day, and I had used a goodly portion of it watching the FIFA Women's World Cup. They play soccer and play quite well. The USA women played an exciting match against France in Munich, winning 3-1 and advancing to the championship match on Sunday. It was good quality stuff and it looked like France might prevail until Abby Wambach scored late in the second half to put the USA ahead for good.

As it was still pretty early in the day and geezer tennis didn't start for another three hours, I decided I'd mosey down to the capitol to see if there were any demonstrations, or perhaps politicians hanging around trying to explain their sorry position on why the state government is shut down. This is day 13 of the shutdown and yet there was very little action at the capitol. There were a few MAPE members carrying signs and some people who may have been reporters hanging around, but not much else was on the agenda today.

So I took a few pictures of the monuments on capitol property. This is the Memorial to the Living - to commemorate veterans who survived war and are still living in our admittedly flawed society. It's been on the grounds since 1982.

And a photo of our state capitol building, which is locked up and waiting for a special session of the legislature to get the government back to work. All the workers who normally would be working on building maintenance and lawn beautification are home getting ready to draw unemployment insurance. The work on the gold horses above the doors is halted and waits for the legislature to act.

So I left the capitol building and went home to get ready for some tennis, It was a great day for smacking tennis balls - in the middle 70's or so. We played a couple of sets - some good points and some mis-hits - and then went home to await another summer day and the World Cup finals on Sunday.

I am starting to think that retirement might be a good option . . .

It doesn't sound encouraging. Sad.

You seem to be having a nice stretch of summer where you are.
