The Author Dennis Herschbach

It's Saturday and a pretty nice one at that. We're well into June and the weather is pretty darn nice. I played tennis in a significant wind this morning, but played well enough even with the breeze to enjoy the experience. The interesting event of the day for me was the book signing at the Once Upon a Crime book store in Minneapolis. NCW and I discovered that one of our classmates, Dennis Herschbach, has been writing a series of crime books set on the North Shore of Lake Superior. He's already at book four in the series, so I guess it's going pretty well. I haven't read any of them ... yet ... but plan to now. We decided to go to the book signing and see if we knew any of his fans. Dennis was there and was glad to see us. Carolyn (nee) Booth and Libby (nee) Nordstrom were there, too. We chatted a bit and caught up with some news of the class of 1961.  It was good to talk to Dennis again. We saw him about a month ago at Bill Hachey's funeral, a sad event, and this was much more pleasant. I told him that I hadn't read any of the books, but that I had a lot of time and would like to give his books a try. He autographed the four books in the series and I brought them home to read. I'm starting "Convergence at Two Harbors" this afternoon.

The books in the series and in order left to right:

Grand Old Day is tomorrow so we in this part of the Saintly City will be staying home and ignoring the outside visitors.

Is that the same guy that wrote the poetry book about his deceased wife? I remember him from high school, but only vaguely. (Sort of the way everything works these days.)

Fun post, I'll check Amazon to see if I can support a Mn author.

Libby was the class of '62, good to hear that she's doing okay.

Jimi -- His books are on Amazon, and I ordered the first one. Some light summer reading.

I read a few of the reviews, and they were mostly positive, though a couple of people said that the editing wasn't top notch. I'll let you know what I think.

On Monday my book club is discussing a book by another Minnesota author, Kurt Krueger. Ordinary Grace is the name of it -- set in southern MN along the Minnesota River in the 60's. Not a great book, but not a bad one, either.

That sounds like fun. I started the first one and am about 25 pages into it. So far it's not too bad. NCW is going to read them, too. We can compare notes.

Dennis is the same guy that wrote the grief journey book. He was in several of my math classes and remembered that I helped him with some hard math problems in high school.

Libby lives in Blaine, Mn. and is widowed.

Great post. I love going to readings when I actually know the writer (Charles Baxter and Tim O'Brien from Macalester). I look forward to reading your classmate's books during the upcoming Summer Reading Festival (at least the first one if Santini still has it lying about). Please post a review after you and NCW have read a couple.
